SEA BISCUIT TO TRISCUIT

If the pseudo-horse people and groups have their way, thousands of horses will be slaughtered in DeKalb, Illinois. The Cavel International, Inc., a Belgium company, is a horse slaughtering business destroyed by fire in 2002. A new facility is scheduled to open in March . However, there is a bill (SB1921) that would ban the slaughter.

The only thing that can stop this attack on an American icon is for the public to call their state representative at once and demand they vote YES for SB 1921.

The bill is supposed to come up for a vote Thursday or Friday of this week. Those supporting the slaughter are scurrying around Springfield pulling out all the stops in trying to kill legislation that would ban the slaughter. So far, they have convinced many Republicans, including most leadership and some Democrats to vote NO on this bill.

They maintain many credible horse groups support the slaughter and those who oppose the slaughter are just animal rights extremists.

In fact, over 30 horse and other organizations support the ban including The John Marshall Law School, Animal Law, Pam Kuhl Horse Transportation, Drexler Horse Transportation, The Illinois Thoroughbred Horseman's Association, The Illinois Horseman's Benevolent Protective Association, The Illinois Harness Horseman's Association, Arlington Park Racecourse, Hawthorne National Racing Association Fairmount Park, Balmoral/Maywood Park, Churchill Downs, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, etc.

Among those supporting the slaughter are the department of agriculture who supports slaughter of farm animals and the AVMA. This is the same AVMA who recently supported the grinding to death of 300 baby chicks in a wood chipper.

Supporters of the slaughter say reopening the slaughterhouse will bring jobs to Illinois. In fact, Cavel provides 40 minimum wage jobs with a high turnover.

They say the slaughterhouse is a humane end to horses. Tell that to the horses who will be slaughtered while still alive and conscious because there are no AVMA approved humane devices at the plant.

Texas is the only other state that allows horse slaughter but the state attorney general is now in court trying to ban the slaughter.

So please all concerned and especially ALL ILLINOIS RESIDENTS contact (call, fax, e-mail) as many Illinois legislators as you can before January 13th.

Express your strong opinion that Americans do not slaughter or eat their
beloved horses. Horses in American culture are revered as a domesticated, recreational, favored (not eaten) animals.
